Huawei LUNA2000 - Overview
The Huawei LUNA2000 is a modular high-voltage lithium iron phosphate battery system designed for residential and small-commercial solar installations. It pairs exclusively with Huawei SUN2000 hybrid inverters - including the Huawei SUN2000-6KTL-M1 - and offers capacity in 5 kWh increments from a single module up to three stacked modules (15 kWh). The high-voltage architecture at 384 V nominal delivers lower current at a given power level, which reduces cabling losses and allows thinner DC wiring between the battery and inverter.
This is not a general-purpose battery. If you have a non-Huawei inverter, stop reading here: the LUNA2000 will not work with it. That tight ecosystem lock-in is the most important purchasing consideration, before specs or pricing.
Modular Capacity and Stacking
Each LUNA2000 module stores 5 kWh of usable energy and discharges at a continuous 2.5 kW. Stack two modules for 10 kWh / 5 kW, or three for 15 kWh / 7.5 kW. The modules bolt together as a physical stack and connect to the inverter via a single DC cable, so adding capacity later is straightforward if the inverter was pre-wired for it.
The 5 kWh starting point suits small EU households with modest overnight loads (lighting, standby, a few appliances). A 10 kWh system covers most 3-4 person homes with average grid independence goals. The 15 kWh system only makes economic sense if you have a heat pump, EV charger, or very high consumption.
LFP Chemistry and 10-Year Warranty
Huawei specifies LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry, which trades some energy density for significantly better thermal stability compared to NMC cells. LFP cells do not enter thermal runaway as easily as NMC under fault conditions, which is relevant for an indoor wall-mounted system. The round-trip efficiency of >=95% is competitive for a high-voltage AC-coupled system.
The warranty covers 10 years with 70% end-of-warranty usable capacity. That means after a decade of daily cycling, at least 3.5 kWh of the original 5 kWh module capacity must remain - a reasonable but not exceptional floor. Tesla Powerwall 3 warrants 70% at 10 years. BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS warrants 70% at 10 years. The LUNA2000 is in the same territory.
IP65 and Installation Flexibility
IP65 rating means the LUNA2000 is dust-sealed and protected against water jets, making it suitable for outdoor or semi-exposed installation such as garages, utility rooms, or external wall mounts. The operating discharge range extends to -20 degC, so cold-climate installs are not a concern. Charging below 0 degC is disabled to protect the cells, as with all LFP systems.
Weight per module is 71 kg. Three stacked modules reach 213 kg, which requires structural assessment of the installation wall for a wall-mount configuration. Floor-mount on the optional stand is the safer choice for 15 kWh systems.
FusionSolar Monitoring
Huawei's FusionSolar app connects via the Smart Dongle (WLAN or 4G version, sold separately). The dongle sits between the inverter and your router and relays data to Huawei's cloud servers. FusionSolar shows real-time solar generation, battery state-of-charge, grid import/export, and household consumption. The interface is cleaner than some competitors, with per-day energy flow charts and a basic self-consumption target setting.
One downside: FusionSolar relies on Huawei cloud servers. There is no local-only monitoring mode as of 2026. If Huawei's cloud service has an outage, you lose visibility - though the battery continues operating independently.
LUNA2000 vs Competitors
The LUNA2000 competes directly with the SolarEdge Home Battery 48V and the Tesla Powerwall 3 in the residential storage market. Here is the practical comparison on 10 kWh configurations:
- SolarEdge Home Battery: DC-coupled, 94.5%+ efficiency, also inverter-locked (SolarEdge Energy Hub only), USD 8,500. Higher efficiency advantage for daily solar cycling.
- Tesla Powerwall 3: 13.5 kWh fixed capacity, AC-coupled, 97.5% round-trip (claimed), USD 11,500 installed. More flexible inverter compatibility.
- BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS: 10.2 kWh base, high-voltage, multi-inverter compatible (SMA, Fronius, Kostal, others). EUR 5,500. Better inverter flexibility at a higher cost.
The LUNA2000's advantage is tight integration with Huawei SUN2000 inverters: combined system commissioning, coordinated firmware updates, and a single-vendor support chain. If you already have or plan to buy a SUN2000 inverter, the LUNA2000 is the obvious battery choice. The 5 kWh modular step-up is also genuinely useful for phased investment: buy 5 kWh now, add a module in two years when prices drop or consumption rises.
Key Advantages
- Modular design - 5 kWh increments let you right-size storage budget at install time
- >=95% round-trip efficiency - competitive for AC-coupled residential systems
- IP65 outdoor rated - works in garages, external wall mounts, utility areas
- LFP chemistry - better thermal safety profile than NMC alternatives
- SUN2000 deep integration - coordinated commissioning and firmware with Huawei inverters
Key Limitations
- SUN2000-only compatibility - zero interoperability with other inverter brands
- FusionSolar cloud dependency - no local-only monitoring mode
- 71 kg per module - three-module installs require structural wall assessment
- Charging suspended below 0 degC - cold climates reduce winter cycling ability
