Huawei LUNA2000 S1 - Overview
The LUNA2000 S1 is Huawei's current residential battery and the one that holds the Smart String ESS slot in its product line. It's built from LFP modules in two sizes, 5 kWh and 6.9 kWh, that stack one to three high in a single tower. Mix them and you get nine capacities, from 5 kWh up to 20.7 kWh, in steps small enough that you rarely have to round up. Four towers run in parallel for 82.8 kWh, though that particular trick needs an MB0 inverter behind it - Huawei's own footnote 8 is explicit about that, and sizing a four-tower system behind an M1 or an L1 gets you a design that cannot be built.
The 13.8 kWh two-module build (LUNA2000-14-S1) is the configuration most three-phase homes land on, and it's the one this review centers on. Why that size? It roughly covers an evening-to-morning cycle for a household with an EV charging off-peak, without paying for a third module that mostly sits full in summer. Expect around EUR 4,700 to EUR 5,900 for it at German and Austrian distributors as of September 2026, with outliers well above that.
The predecessor is reviewed separately at Huawei LUNA2000 S0. The short version of the difference: the S0 uses 5 kWh modules on a 5 kW power module and stops at 15 kWh per tower, the S1 uses 5 and 6.9 kWh modules on a 10.5 kW power module and reaches 20.7 kWh.
Modules, Power, and the 3.5 kW Rule
Each battery module contributes 3.5 kW of charge and discharge capability, so the math is transparent: a 14-S1 moves 7 kW, and only a three-module tower reaches the 10.5 kW ceiling of the shared LUNA2000-10KW-C1 power module. That's true of the 15, 16.9, 18.8 and 20.7 kWh builds alike, because power tracks module count, not kilowatt-hours. Internalize that before sizing, because a two-module tower cannot absorb a 10 kW midday surplus no matter what the inverter offers. Plan module count against your peak flows, not just your kWh appetite.
Chemistry and Usable Depth
The cells are lithium iron phosphate, the conservative choice for a box that lives against a house wall. Huawei rates usable depth at 100%, so the 13.8 kWh figure is what you get rather than a gross number with a hidden reserve haircut. Read the footnote though: that's measured at 0.2C, at 25C, at the beginning of service life. It's an honest number for a new battery on a mild day, not a promise about year eight.
Huawei calls the S1 layout Module+ Architecture, and the proof it isn't marketing is the capacity table: 5 kWh and 6.9 kWh modules mix freely in one tower, which is why there are nine sizes instead of three. Whether you can add a module years later without matching the batch is a question for your installer and the current installation manual, not for a spec sheet.
Warranty
Five years is the basic term. Fifteen is available, but it's conditional: register the system in FusionSolar and keep it internet-connected, because the advanced warranty is void if the system stays offline for more than six months. End-of-warranty capacity follows the same split as the rest of Huawei's EU range - 80% or 13.52 MWh of throughput in Germany, 60% or 28.84 MWh everywhere else in the EU. A 15-year term that depends on a cloud account staying live for 15 years is a trade, not a gift, and it's worth weighing before it decides your purchase.
Physical Reality
A module weighs 68 kg and the assembled 14-S1 lands at 148 kg on its floor stand, 590 x 255 x 870 mm. A single-module tower is 510 mm tall and 80 kg, a three-module tower 1230 mm and 216 kg. This is a two-person installation, full stop. IP66 permits outdoor placement, and the -20C to +55C window covers most European siting, though LFP charging slows near the cold end - a garage wall beats an exposed north face. Cooling is passive and noise stays under 29 dB at a metre.
Who Should Buy the LUNA2000 S1
Owners of a SUN2000 hybrid inverter, which in practice means most of Huawei's residential line: the L1, LB0, LC0, M1, MAP0 and MB0 families all take an S1, as do the SUN5000 units. The SUN2000-15K-MB0 is the one that unlocks four towers in parallel, and the SUN2000-6KTL-M1 takes a single tower happily. Scheduling comes from the EMMA-A02 on top.
My opinion: within Huawei's ecosystem the 14-S1 is the rational default, and the per-module 3.5 kW limit is the spec sheet's most underrated line - more buyers are surprised by power than by capacity. Outside the ecosystem, compare against the BYD Battery-Box before committing, because the LUNA only talks to Huawei inverters.
