Enphase IQ Battery 5P - Overview
The Enphase IQ Battery 5P is a 5 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) AC-coupled battery built for self-consumption and backup. All 5 kWh is usable, and there are six IQ8D-BAT grid-forming microinverters inside the box rather than one central power stage. LFP chemistry brings a lower thermal runaway risk and a longer cycle life than NMC alternatives. Because the 5P connects to the AC bus, it drops onto any existing solar system - SolarEdge, Fronius, SMA, Huawei - without touching the solar inverter.
AC Coupling - No Inverter Replacement Required
Sitting on the AC side is what makes this the retrofit battery. Nothing about your existing inverter has to change. The trade-off against a DC-coupled system such as the Powerwall 3 or a SolarEdge Home Hub is conversion loss: solar DC becomes AC, then DC again to charge, then AC again to feed the house. Each hop costs about 3 to 5%, which is why Enphase publishes a 90% round-trip figure rather than the mid-90s a DC-coupled battery can claim.
LFP Chemistry - Safety and Longevity
LFP cells contain no cobalt or nickel, which trims supply chain risk and thermal runaway hazard next to NMC chemistries. Enphase warrants the 5P to keep more than 60% of its capacity for 15 years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first. Cycle it once a day and you'll reach the cycle count somewhere around year 16, so in practice the calendar limit expires first. That 15-year term is the strongest thing on this datasheet and it gets mentioned far less than it deserves.
The North American unit is listed to UL 9540 and tested to UL 9540A, with UL 1973 and UN 38.3 on the cell module.
Enphase Ensemble Ecosystem
The IQ Battery 5P integrates with Enphase's Ensemble energy management system when paired with an IQ System Controller 3. The controller handles solar production, battery state of charge and tariff scheduling, and it's what makes whole-home backup possible during an outage. The 5P datasheet pairs it with the IQ System Controller 3 and 3G and the IQ Combiner 5 and 5C, so if a quote lists a Controller 2, that's last-generation kit.
Key Advantages
- AC-coupled retrofit - adds storage to any existing solar system without an inverter swap
- LFP chemistry - safer and longer-lived than NMC; no cobalt
- NEMA 3R outdoor rated - fine on an exterior wall, though charging is limited below -20 deg C and it's happiest between 0 and 30 deg C
- Modular stacking - an IQ System Controller 3 takes up to 40 kWh of 5P units, or 80 kWh with PCS control
- 66.3 kg lifting weight - two installers can hang it; the 78.9 kg figure is the installed total
- Enphase Enlighten integration - battery state, cycles and grid interaction in the same app as the panels
