Fronius Primo 8.2-1 - Overview
The Fronius Primo 8.2-1 is Fronius's 8.2 kW single-phase residential inverter, sized for roughly 6,600 to 12,700 W of DC panels. One thing you need to know before you shop: Fronius has ended production of the whole SnapINverter line. Final orders closed on 31 October 2025 and production stopped on 31 December 2025, so anything you find now is channel stock. The replacement is the Primo GEN24 Plus, with the newer Verto and Argeno ranges above it. Service parts and exchange devices continue through the warranty period.
That doesn't make the Primo a bad buy if a distributor still has one on a shelf and prices it accordingly. It does mean you should not pay 2026 money for 2019 hardware, and it means the specs below describe the US/UL model (600 V DC, 240 V AC), not the 1000 V international unit that shares the name.
Dual MPPT and String Configuration
The Primo 8.2-1 runs two independent MPP trackers under a shared 600 V DC ceiling, with an 80 to 600 V operating window and a 420 V nominal input. Two trackers means two separately optimised string arrays - handy for east-west split roofs or panels sitting at different tilts. That 600 V ceiling is higher than SolarEdge's 480 V, so you can run longer strings and trim DC cabling losses on a sprawling roof.
Fronius Solar.web Monitoring
Fronius includes Solar.web monitoring at no additional cost. You get yield data, performance ratio tracking, fault alerts, and an API for pulling numbers into a home energy management system. Solar.web gives you string-level data out of the box. If you want panel-level numbers you add Tigo TS4 optimizers plus a Tigo Access Point and a Cloud Connect Advanced, and you read those in Tigo's own portal - Solar.web does not ingest Tigo module data.
Third-Party Optimizer Compatibility
Fronius is unusually open about third-party hardware. The Primo works fine behind Tigo TS4-A-O optimizers, so you can get module-level shutdown and monitoring without buying into SolarEdge's closed stack. The two platforms run side by side rather than merging: inverter data in Solar.web, module data in Tigo Energy Intelligence.
Who Should Buy the Primo 8.2-1 and Field Notes
The 8.2 kW rating suits a mid-to-large home running roughly 8 to 11 kW of DC panels. If your roof only supports a 6 kW array, this is oversized and you're paying for capacity you'll never use. Where it earns its keep is the larger home, ideally one with an EV and a heat pump pushing daytime self-consumption up.
A field note worth more than the spec table: Fronius units have a strong reliability reputation in Australia and Europe, but the older Primo line had a known reputation for fan noise and occasional fan-related faults. The 8.2-1 is actively cooled by a variable-speed fan, so mount it somewhere a low hum won't bother anyone - a garage or utility wall, not next to a bedroom. At 21.5 kg it's a two-person lift, though it isn't the heaviest unit here; the SMA Sunny Boy 6.0-US is 26 kg.
My opinion: the open ecosystem was always the real reason to choose Fronius, and it still is - but buy the GEN24 rather than hunting down the last SnapINverter. Pairing a Fronius with Tigo TS4-A-O optimizers gets you panel-level monitoring and shutdown without surrendering to SolarEdge, and Solar.web stays free for the life of the system with a genuine API. Remaining Primo 8.2 stock is listing around 2,100 to 2,850 USD at US distributors and creeping up as inventory thins, which is a strange thing to pay for a product with no forward roadmap.
