Huawei EMMA-A02 - Overview
The EMMA-A02 is the least photogenic and most consequential box in Huawei's residential lineup: a DIN-rail module that combines a 1% accurate energy meter, the communication hub, and the scheduling brain of the whole system. EMMA stands for Energy Management Assistant, and the part number is 02314JES-001 if you need to check a quote line. Once it's in the distribution board, it measures grid exchange to within 1% and coordinates up to three inverters, two chargers, one SG-ready heat pump and twenty Shelly-controlled loads. It decides when the battery charges, when the car draws, and when the heat pump should soak up surplus PV. Want a second heat pump under its control? That goes through a Shelly relay, not a second direct connection.
One oddity worth knowing before you search for it: Huawei has pulled EMMA's web product page. The old solar.huawei.com/en/products/emma/specs/ URL now returns a 404, as do the regional copies, and EMMA no longer appears in the residential product listing. The datasheet PDF is still published and distributors still stock the unit, so this is a website housekeeping problem rather than an end-of-life notice. Version 01-202411 is the current datasheet.
What It Actually Does
Most solar installs treat the meter as a dumb sensor. EMMA inverts that: measurement and management live in one device, so the scheduling logic acts on the same numbers the meter reports. It forecasts PV production and shifts battery and charger behavior against that prediction, rather than reacting after the fact. Peak shaving, PV-preferred mode and feed-in limitation are all on the feature list, along with automatic diesel generator start and stop for sites that have one.
The feature I'd actually pay for is the tariff one. In Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and the Netherlands, EMMA pulls Nord Pool day-ahead prices automatically and arbitrages the battery against them without anyone writing a schedule. Outside those markets you're back to manual time-of-use windows, which is a meaningfully weaker product.
Connectivity for a Distribution Board
The interface list reads like a small PLC: separate 10/100 LAN and WAN ports, 802.11b/g/n WLAN in both access-point and station modes, two RS485 buses at up to 115200 bps, two digital inputs and two digital outputs. Two Ethernet ports rather than one matters if the board sits on a segmented home network. Direct metering covers up to 63 A, with external CTs above that.
It draws about 4 W and runs off 100-240 Vac single-phase or 346-415 Vac three-phase. Separately, it can meter across a much wider window, 85-299 Vac line-to-neutral and 148-520 Vac line-to-line, so a sagging supply doesn't put the measurement out of range even when it's uncomfortable for everything else in the board. Those two ranges get confused constantly, including on spec pages that should know better. IP2X means it belongs inside an enclosure, which is where a DIN-rail device should live anyway, and the cabinet needs at least 47.5 mm of height.
The Ecosystem Consideration
EMMA leans hard on Huawei hardware for the generation side - SUN2000 and SUN5000 inverters and Huawei's SCharger units only - but the load side isn't closed. Any SG-ready heat pump connects directly, and up to 20 Shelly plugs and relays (Plus Plug S, Plus 2PM, Pro 2PM) extend control to whatever else you want shifted. Add Modbus-TCP and third-party VPP support, including FCR-D frequency regulation, and it's less of a walled garden than the branding suggests.
Inverter and battery data flow over Modbus TCP on the LAN, so a Home Assistant or similar setup can observe everything EMMA orchestrates without touching the vendor cloud. It isn't switched on out of the box. Somebody with an installer account has to enable Modbus in EMMA's setup, disable TLS, and whitelist the IP you'll be polling from. Worth agreeing with your installer before they drive away.
Who Should Buy the EMMA-A02
Anyone assembling the full Huawei stack - SUN2000 MB0 inverter, LUNA2000 S1 battery, and an EV charger - should treat EMMA as the default third component rather than an accessory. It runs about EUR 313 to EUR 329 including VAT at EU distributors as of September 2026. My opinion: it's the piece that turns three good devices into one coherent system, and skipping it to save a modest sum is the classic false economy of ecosystem builds.
One caveat worth reading twice before you commit. Footnote 4 on Huawei's datasheet says smart scheduling is free for two years from the trial start date, after which Huawei reserves the right to charge for it. Nobody has said what that price would be. You're buying hardware whose headline function might become a subscription, and that's a real risk on a 20-year install. If you're not committed to Huawei hardware, EMMA has no role anyway; buy a plain CT meter instead.
