Panel efficiency is the most quoted specification in solar and one of the least useful for choosing between products, because it describes area rather than value.
A 22% efficient panel converts 22% of the irradiance landing on it into electricity under test conditions. That figure sets how much power a given roof area produces, which matters intensely when roof space is the binding constraint and barely at all when it is not. A house with more roof than it needs can hit its target with cheaper, less efficient modules and spend the saving elsewhere in the system.
Temperature is where intuition fails most often. Panels perform better in cold conditions, not worse. Output rises as cell temperature falls, at roughly 0.3 to 0.4% per degree for crystalline silicon, which is why a clear February day can produce a higher instantaneous peak than a hazy August afternoon. Annual yield still favours summer, because irradiance and day length dominate, but the daily peaks tell a different story.
Technology differences are narrowing in efficiency and diverging in behaviour. TOPCon and heterojunction cells (NREL cell efficiency chart) hold a real advantage in temperature coefficient and low-light response rather than in headline percentage. Bifacial modules add production from reflected light, which depends entirely on what is underneath them and is close to zero on a standard pitched roof.
The number that actually predicts a bill is annual yield per installed kilowatt for a specific location and orientation, not the efficiency printed on the datasheet.
