#Solar Cost Guides: Price Per Watt, Per kWh, and Payback

Ask what solar costs and you'll get a system price, which is the least useful number in the conversation. $21,000 tells you nothing by itself. The unit that makes quotes comparable is dollars per watt installed: a typical 8 kW home system runs $20,000 to $25,000 in the US, or roughly $2.50 to $3.13 per watt (Wood Mackenzie), and the EnergySage marketplace average sits near $2.60 before incentives.

That benchmark also gives you a walk-away line. The median US cash buyer paid about $3.50 per watt in 2024 (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), so a quote above that means you're paying more than half the market did - and above $4 without genuine site complications, the polite move is to stop returning calls.

Cost per kWh answers a different question: is the electricity itself cheap? New utility-scale solar averages 5.8 cents per kWh in the EIA's AEO2026 levelized cost figures, with a regional spread of 4.1 to 8.2 cents. Where you live moves residential math just as hard - the same hardware yields roughly 900 kWh per installed kW per year in Alaska and about 1,750 in Arizona, so identical systems pay back at very different speeds.

One more thing changed recently, and it's easy to miss in older articles: the 30 percent federal residential credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Payback estimates that still assume it are quietly wrong by years.
